
He is cerebral, poetic, and mind-bending. The irony of this is that Norwegian Wood, out of the 6 novels I have now read, has the most cohesive story arch.īut Murakami is not known for being cohesive. At the time, I enjoyed it immensely and read it like wildfire, but there still seemed to be something missing from the story. The first Murakami novel I read was Norwegian Wood. But, the fact remains, you’re either into Murakami or you’re not. I can spend hours praising his bizarre, yet poetically perfect turns of phrase, or his twisting, inexplicable narrative.


So a few weeks ago I decided to take a break with something I knew would please me: Murakami.

For the past few months, I have been slowly working my way through several large books, a stack of graduate school applications, and a myriad of job listings/cover letters/résumés.
